The two had arrived in the kitchen quicker than Jordan thought. As Sara set her hand down on the table he felt something that he hadn’t experienced since this entire ordeal began. He felt trepidation. As he stepped off her hand onto the cold marble tabletop a shiver of cold ran down his back. He looked from left to right surveying the scene.
“Nothing is here, I promise. I shouldn’t have left you alone. This is new for me too. You were being so macho and I’m a man about it I thought it would be fine but I knew better. My gut told me not to leave you alone. I won’t make that mistake again. You’re not all that different than the kids I babysit down the street.” Sara said partially to Jordan but also just out loud to herself.
“I think I’m a little different than the kids you babysit,” Jordan said having felt his pride take a massive below between her words and the events that had transpired the past few minutes.
“A little yeah,” Sara said as she took another bite of cereal. “Anyway, take this,” she said while still chewing cereal.
“What am I supposed to do with this cloth? This table is way too big to clean. We’d be here all day.”
“Wow, I really need to spell this out for you. It’s not for the table genius. I can do that myself much more effectively. The phone, duh.”
“I could practically hear that eye-roll.”
“Good because I laid it on pretty thick. Seriously though I have ADHD and it causes me to hyperfocus on things. One of those things is the smudges on my phone screen. When I mentioned chores you could do. I meant things like this. So, like get to it or whatever.” Sara said in a joking yet serious tone.
“You are serious, aren’t you? You could….I mean sure.” Jordan thought better of arguing back as he felt her gaze settle on his diminutive form. Like mother like daughter Jordan thought to himself as he started heading towards her phone.
