The words her little man felt emphasized to Jordan. He knew that it could have just been his imagination. As he had no reason to distrust Sara. She hadn’t done anything to harm him, and she hadn’t purposefully degraded him in any way. However, the phrase made him feel like he was her possession all the same.
Sara lifted Jordan out of his habitat as she looked down at the small man. It still felt strange to her that she could hold a person in the palm of her hand. It wasn’t anything she ever thought about before the outbreak. For the first several months, she was scared. It wasn’t until they had discovered a specific reaction in the body as the cause that she began to feel safer. As it wasn’t long after that, they found out that only some people were affected at all.
As Sara looked down at Jordan, she remembered that day she went to her mother’s hospital and got tested. It was a dank room she had to wait in. It was horrible as her mother was stuck at work and her dad was stuck in a meeting. The loneliness of sitting there waiting for the doctor to return. As horrible as she felt leading up to that moment, the amount of joy she felt upon hearing she was immune when her mom and dad’s tests came back the same as hers, she was thrilled. Now, as she looks down at Jordan, she can’t help but feel a pang of guilt. As happy as she felt, he won’t ever get to experience that.
“Sara, are you up?” they heard Tiffany’s voice yell, followed by a pounding on her door.
“Yes, Mom,” Sara responded.
“You have money for lunch, right?” Tiffany said, opening the door.
“Yes, Mom,” Sara said, slightly annoyed but trying her best to hide it.
“Okay, sweetie. You have a good day then. Love you.” Tiffany said as she disappeared, walking back down the hall.
“Ugh, I’m not a baby. I’m responsible for a whole nother life now. Can you believe she talks to me like that?” Sara said, looking down at Jordan.
“What do you mean?”
“Are you seriously taking her side? Really?” Sara said in an agitated tone.
“Side? I don’t even know what you’re upset about.” Jordan said
“You should be on my side in all situations. We are on a team.”
“Well, my team left me hanging with Dayton.”
“My team left me hanging with Dayton. I’m Jordan and can’t handle a 12-year-old.” Sara said teasingly in her high-pitched Jordan voice.

oh Jordan, Dayton isn’t going to be the only time she’s gonna leave you hanging, not even close.
I can’t believe you would besmirch Sara’s good name.
I noticed Tiffany didn’t acknowledge Jordan with Sara, did she not see him or did she just blow him off as a nothing now that he is little?

There’s also the possibility that she knew his voice just wouldn’t carry threw the door.
Though later on she definitely treats him like he’s lesser when he and she are in the same room, most prominently by ignoring/not acknowledging him but most noticeably when she asked questions about him to Sara while he’s in the room.
