As they arrived on campus Jordan saw the outside world clearly for the first time. Normally he was in a purse or a pocket when Sara traveled outside. This time he was in her hand as she walked across the large campus with Ellie. Jordan looked from left to right unable to comprehend how truly large the campus was. Large brick and stone buildings surrounded the middle concourse they were walking through now. The entire campus felt more like a college campus than a private school.
What made Jordan feel sick was that this school was an all-ages school. So, the varying buildings held classes for different grades from kindergarten all way through high school graduation. Seeing people, he would consider mere children now looked simply monstrous to Jordan. It forced him to come face to face with the fact that for better or worse this was his life.
This was the third day since he had become stricken with Smallara. Any hope even slim is truly gone. This minute, meek body was what he was left with to tackle this now expansive world. The fact that this campus alone was big enough by itself to be his world would have been outrageous just days ago but now is the reality.
“So do you think you’ll see a lot of us Smallera victims amongst your classmates?” Jordan asked. He hated that he had to shout his question several times just to be heard over there booming. However, his meek voice was so easily overpowered by all the noises of the school and conversations of her peers not to mention the conversation Sara and Ellie were having amongst themselves.
“Doubtful, the government is rounding up everyone not registered to a guardian,” Ellie said offhandedly.
“Ellie! I hadn’t told him about that. I was going to say something I just didn’t want to scare you any more than you already were. If I hadn’t volunteered to be your guardian. You wouldn’t have gone to a host family. The government would have taken you. The intent is that everyone taken will be assigned to a guardian but no one knows. The testing is extreme”
“What testing? You did it over the phone in a few minutes”
“Not exactly. You see Ellie and I had a pact when this began. If anything happened, we were gonna volunteer to be the other’s guardian as we were scared and not everyone is a trustworthy person. I was already in the system and approved to be a guardian which took months. I just had to get approved to be your guardian. Before this weekend a lot of people no offense were like you thought it was a joke or it wouldn’t happen to them.”
