“No one is here but Mrs. Brooks why are we so early,” Chloe asked as they walked into the classroom.
“Sara has to check-in. You heard the announcement.” Ellie said quietly to Chloe.
“Hello, Mrs. Brooks,” The girls said greeting their professor as they walked into the classroom. Jordan looked at the young-looking teacher with surprise. He gripped the knit fabric of Sara’s sweater tightly as he stared at Mrs. Brooks.
“Girls, why don’t you take your seats? Sara if we could speak over here for a moment.” Mrs. Brooks asked as she stared at Jordan perched on Sara’s shoulder.
“Sure, is there paperwork I need to fill out? I plan to bring him to school each day. It doesn’t seem safe to leave him at home unsupervised.” Sara said.
“Yes, I will get him added to the class roster. We have to account for every person in the school. Especially our new little friends. Where did you find him? If I might ask?” Mrs. Brooks said.
“Oh just in my backyard. I was mowing the lawn and he just practically threw himself at me. Pleading for help.” Sara said. Jordan wanted to refute the claim. Especially because each time Sara added to the story and now this is especially embarrassing considering the situation. “Lucky for him, I was already in the guardian program so he didn’t have to go to a government facility.”
“I’m sorry. I should explain as that question probably sounds weird. Jordan and I were together up until a few months ago. When I heard about the outbreak I actually went to your house Jordan. I still had my spare key so I was able to let myself in. When I didn’t find you there a feared the worst.” Mrs. Brooks said as she bit her lower lip as her voice wavered.
“Oh, So you must be Mrs. Hottie. Jordan said he dated someone but they broke up and wouldn’t tell me anything else. I had no idea it was you, Mrs. Brooks. I’m so sorry. If I had known…”
“It’s fine. How would you know? He’s safe, that’s what matters.”
“Hey, Emily!” Jordan said waving from Sara’s shoulder a bit unsure how to act.
“Jordan, if you want, I could take care of you. I know I said I was busy with my career but…”
“Jordan has a home, Mrs. Brooks. So that won’t be necessary. We appreciate the offer though.” Sara said not letting the question go any further. “Is there anything else I need to do?” Sara said as she patted Jordan on the head.
