The bell rang, freeing the students from Mrs. Brooks’s English class. Jordan could only watch as Sara and her friends started shuffling around as they put their books away. Jordan looked back at Emily as she erased the board, unable to do much else.
Jordan was filled for the first time with thoughts of what if. What if he had stayed in his home? What if Emily had found him? He never even considered her a viable option. They had been broken up, and she made it clear he wasn’t a priority. He desperately wanted to ask what had changed. Why had she come and looked for him that day? Jordan’s thoughts were interrupted as Ellie stepped into his field of view. She talked to Sara, who was standing up. Sara lowered her palm onto the desk, and without saying a word, Jordan clambered onto her hand.
Jordan stood in the palm of Sara’s hand, fearful as they stopped in the hallway. The large-bodied teens that Jordan had been focused on earlier in the morning had vanished from his view as he saw the cross look on Sara’s face.
“Mrs. Brooks is such a bitch.” Sara huffed as she vented to her friends.
“She definitely has it out for you. I mean, in her eyes, you do have her man. Who would have thought Mrs. Brooks would be so petty.” Chloe said as she looked down at Jordan briefly before looking at Sara again.
“I’m not her…” Jordan managed to say before Sara spoke over him.
“Well, Jordan is mine, and I’m not going to give him up to her. I shouldn’t have to. I’ve done all the work.” Sara continued to fume. Jordan’s voice was powerless against there’s as they continued to talk about the situation, all of them taking Sara’s side.
As Sara spoke the words, Jordan was taken aback. She hadn’t said he was hers before, and Jordan wasn’t sure what that entirely meant. Dayton said Sara liked him. Is she trying to fulfill some fantasy? As he thought deeper, maybe she viewed him as a possession. That was undoubtedly the more plausible scenario.
“Well? What do you have to say for yourself?” Sara asked as she looked down at Jordan, jarring him from his thoughts. Jordan looked about confused as he hadn’t been listening to their conversation. He made eye contact ever so briefly with Ellie and then Chloe, who were both staring back at him but provided no clue as to what was asked.
“Uhhh…about Emily?” Jordan asked
“Typical boy, not even listening.” Ellie chided as she shook her said.
“Oh, like you have soo much experience.” Chloe teased as Ellie gave her a playful shove before their focus returned to Jordan.
“Yes, about Mrs. Brooks. What do you have to say” for yourself? You were sleeping with the enemy.” Sara huffed.
