His giant caretaker easily pulled away the mountainous chair that was mere feet from Jordan. These everyday actions would have to become a regular part of life at some point. However, less than a week in, it still felt new and foreign.
Every classroom was a new frightening place. Jordan looked like massive-sized teens moved about in every direction, and he was an afterthought to them all as they continued on about their lives.
Gingerly he stepped off Sara’s hand and onto the large black table in the science room. Looking back Jordan could see Sara had moved on talking with this girl named Lauren. He was unsure if either of these girls were friends of hers or if they were just classmates.
“Come here,” Maisy said while at the same time she reached towards him. Jordan could see in her eyes that she was planning to pick him up. He started inching backward. Sara’s arm was propped up on the table. Jordan quickly fell back to the safety of her vicinity. Jordan felt small and helpless his size as he peeked out from behind Sara’s arm.
Just days ago, this would never happen. Jordan wouldn’t even have fathomed hiding from any of these girls. Now a mere teenager is trying to grab him. Pick him up without even asking permission. The idea of him having rights to his personal space is seemingly an afterthought to her.
“Sara,” Jordan said, but all the chatter drowned out his voice throughout the classroom.
“Just a second. You will have to wait.” Sara said, interrupting her conversation only briefly to speak to him. In one motion she was back into her conversation.
Maisy smiled as she reached toward the small person. She hadn’t ever been so close to someone who was this small. She had been diagnosed as immune early on. She never had to live with the fear that some of the others had. She hadn’t even given much thought to someone having to live with the disease.
Maisy knew she could have just asked Sara to see him at any point. She liked watching the miniature-sized man squirm and hide as she approached him with the most casual of arm reaches. Never had she had a boy afraid of her. They usually towered over her and draped their arms around her. Held her close to themselves as they walked down the hall.
This tiny guy was different, though. He now cowered her before her while he tried to seek cover from another no bigger than her. The notion of it all brought a smile across her face. This new world was going to be a fascinating one. She wondered if maybe she should sign up for guardianship as Sara had.
