The footsteps of Sara sounded monstrous as they crashed into the tiled floor of the school. The voices of all the students swirled about creating a miasma of sound which hung in the air. The large bodies of the students streamed by Sara on either side as she clutched him in her hand that dangled at her side.
The experience was unnerving as Jordan turned his head up he found it uncomfortable to view Sara from this vantage point. Normally she held him up higher against her breastbone or perched on her shoulder. This time he was merely clutched in her hand like a set of keys someone holds as they walk out to their car.
The vantage point created a seemingly greater imbalance of power as the only conclusion Jordan could draw was that his voice was not strong enough to reach her over all the other sounds of the school. Even a shout or a scream was seemingly enveloped by the void and left inaudible to her. All the more frustrating was seeing her greeted by other people with an ease Jordan no longer possessed.
Sara would stop briefly and chat or wave with her opposite hand. Sometimes the person would look down at him clutched in her hand helplessly overpowered by the slightest bit of pressure applied. Many though didn’t even notice and the more Jordan thought about it why would they? It’s not as if these people were looking for him or even knew him. When he started conversations with people before the sickness he would be looking at them not their hands. It was no different now. He wasn’t even an afterthought to many of these giants. He just wasn’t even a thought.
Jordan pushed against Sara’s hand hoping to get her attention. He felt a vulnerability not being able to be in contact with Sara. If she got bumped at lost her grip on him would she notice? Jordan wondered, which made the situation that much more harrowing. The notion of being lost in this school alone was frightening. It made Jordan clutch Sara’s hand a bit more.
They went down a series of hallways and corridors which Jordan just seemed lost in because of his size it was hard to keep straight where exactly they were and the layout was quite unfamiliar. It wasn’t until Sara pushed open two large doors revealing a cafeteria that Jordan knew where they were.
