“Oh, that’s Mrs. Daniels. She caught Smallara a few weeks before you did. You probably won’t ever get to meet her. She was kind of a bitch.” Ellie said as she took a bite of her lunch. “But she doesn’t deserve all that.”
“Sadie is the worst. She would have been better off with anyone else.” Chloe said in disgust.
“Then do something. Stop her” Jordan said as Sara plucked the chopsticks from his hands.
“We can’t. Sadie is Mrs. Daniels’s daughter. She’s also her guardian now. While it’s sickening she’s not doing anything illegal.” Chloe said, “If we do something now….”
“…she will just get it worse later,” Ellie said finishing Chloe’s sentence.
“It’s rough out there right now for you little guys. The laws haven’t caught up with the reality of the world.” Sara said as she glanced back at Mrs. Daniels with a sad look.
Jordan couldn’t believe what he was seeing. He kept hoping Mrs. Daniels would run or fight back. He was helpless left only with the ability to watch as the giant teen pressed the dusty, dirty tread of her shoe down onto the miniature woman.
“You don’t have to worry. You’re my whitto man. You don’t have to live that kind of life.” Sara said as she grasped a piece of sushi with the chopsticks and dropped it into her mouth. “So good!”
It was unnerving how they took this as just normal. Now, Jordan didn’t feel so bad fetching Sara’s chopsticks or doing the other menial tasks she asked for if that was the alternative.
“Did you guys hear about Betsy Myers? I was talking to Rachel in my Spanish class and…”
“Shhhh Ellie!! Little ears are present.” Sara scolded before biting a piece of sushi in half before lowering the other half down towards her tray. She held the remaining sushi expertly between her chopsticks. Jordan looked at the rice and raw fish that were all bitten in half.
“Beggers can’t be choosers,” he said to himself before moving towards the edge and taking several bites of the rice and a small bite of avocado before taking a small bite of the seaweed from the wrap.
“His jaw is weak so it helps if I bite his food in half,” Sara said to her friends who were looking on as Jordan ate his fill before Sara lifted the remaining portion eating the rest. “You should have seen him trying to eat an apple. He couldn’t break through the skin. It was so adorable.”
