“Or, and I’m just tossing this out here. Jordan could change in my locker.” Ellie said.
“Ellie!!”
“What? I was just spitballing. You know, see what will make the little guy most comfortable.” Ellie said.
“Oh, I’m sure no ulterior motives were present in that suggestion.” Sara quipped to Ellie. “Come on, you can ride on my shoulder,” Sara said as she reached toward Jordan. He felt his heart race and his breath quicken as Sara’s hand sped towards him.
“Do you think I could hold him, Sara?” Stephanie asked, looking curiously at Jordan.
“He gets pretty nervous around people, and he’s still kinda shy around me. Once he’s more accustomed to everything and if he’s willing to. It wouldn’t bother me. But it’s ultimately his choice.
Jordan knew he was helpless to do anything to stop it as Sara’s fingers curled around him, and he felt himself leave contact with the wooden bench. He was instantly deposited onto her shoulder as she grabbed her phone with her other hand.
Jordan situated himself on Sara’s shoulder as the group of girls walked out of the locker room. As they walked towards the gym, the discussion of him soon faded, and it was moved onto the topic of what they thought they were doing today in the gym.
Jordan wasn’t sure what bothered him more. He didn’t like how he was so easily just forgotten as a topic as he was just assimilated into something of Sara’s. Then just dismissed. Kind of like when someone gets a new dog. It’s the center of attention for a moment; then, it’s not.
Conversely, Jordan also wasn’t a huge fan of when he was the center of attention, and the group of girls was watching his every move and discussing his life. Even if it did provide some new information. He knew there was no way his family would have been able to come up with enough money to file the paperwork to keep him. Nor could they probably afford the classes to become a guardian. Until now, Jordan always thought it was free to become a guardian, and the reality was you had to pay to take a class and pay to keep your license. It was very much a capitalist system.
Jordan noticed the sheer lack of men in this gym class as the gym doors were pushed open. Almost as if she was sensing his question, Sara said that boys and girls had separate gym classes.
“Don’t worry, sweetie. You get to stay with us.” Ellie said as she smiled and patted his head lightly as she walked by.
