“Yes, Ma’am,” Jordan said, knowing he had little choice in the matter at the moment, and her logic was sound as much as Jordan hated to admit it. “You didn’t need to stomp, though. It’s not like I can’t not hear you.” Jordan said he started stretching like everyone else.
“I know, but you should have seen your reaction. You had this oh shit look and then you fell back like a cartoon character. It was too priceless. You’re so easy to prank.” Sara said, still laughing.
“Don’t be like that. I only tease you because I care. If I didn’t tease you, then you’d need to worry. I tease Ellie all the time, and she hates it too. So you’re in good company. Shhh, here comes Mrs. Sanchez. Look busy, or you’ll get us in trouble.” Sara said as she went back to stretching. Jordan rolled his eyes, a bit doubtful Daniela would really do that much, but this was his first experience seeing her teaching, so there was a non-zero chance he was wrong, so he went along with it and started stretching.
“Good, good. Remember to mix up your stretches,” Daniela said as she found her eyes drifting down to her friend between the feet of one of her students. She felt so bad for him but didn’t know how to help him. It was clear that Sara had no intention of relinquishing him, and based on the laws, legally, it was her right. She paid the money and filed the forms, but it somehow seemed so wrong to see one of her best friends reduced to being basically a teenager’s pet.
“Okay, ladies, break into your squads. We will continue doing basketball today but remember we transition to swimming this week so bring your school swimsuits. You will get a zero if you show up in a personal swimsuit.”
“Mrs. Sanchez, does the body, I mean Jordan need a swimsuit?” Sara asked as she moved her foot to partially shield him as Daniela approached.
“Good question; I’m not sure if they have upgraded the pool yet to be safe for our smaller students.” Daniela as she looked down at Jordan briefly.
“He could just use a bucket.” one girl commented, which caused several students to laugh.
“Kayley, not funny. Just because they are smaller people doesn’t mean they don’t deserve respect. I expect you and everyone else to remember that. So why don’t you spend some time running laps and think about your stance. If anyone feels similar as I heard a few laughs, you are welcome to join Kayley.” Mrs. Sanchez said with an upset glare at her student.
“Sorry Mrs. Sanchez,” Kayley said as she started moving towards the out-of-bounds lines of the basketball court to run laps.
“Don’t be sorry, be better. Sizeism has no place here or anywhere else.”
“Yes, Mrs. Sanchez. I was just making a joke, and I wasn’t trying to be a sizeist. How many laps should I run.”
“I will let you know when you’re done, and I believe you when you say you didn’t mean ill intent, but you have to remember these people you’re making jokes about just lost everything and have to find a new way to live. So to them, your harmless joke isn’t so funny or a joke. You would do well to remember that.” Daniela said
