Jordan watched as a stream of 25 or so giant girls walked by Sara. It felt like something out of Jurassic Park. The floor shook slightly as he unconsciously moved near Sara’s foot. He didn’t want to admit it, but he felt a bit of fear watching all the girls move by with a casualness he could no longer fathom. He knew Sara’s words were right. Any misstep on their part could be the end of him.
Jordan leaned against Sara’s white Adidas as she continued to talk with Ellie and Stephanie. Jordan found his mind wandering as he tuned out their conversation about some kind of school event. Jordan, for the first time, wanted to know more about these Smallera laws that now governed his life.
“Come on,” Sara said as her hand swept down, and she grabbed Jordan, jarring him from his contemplations.
“So why doesn’t Chloe like me? She always shoo’s me away.” Stephanie said as she walked alongside Sara.
“Because you’re a gossip mostly. You need to show her that you can be trusted.” Sara said.
“Well, you’re her,” Stephanie began to say before Sara cut her off.
“Steph,” Sara said sharply.
“What? You are her friend. Can’t you put in a good word for me?”
“Steph, I have. Look, I babysit Dayton tomorrow. Maybe you could come by to keep me company, and I could talk her into coming with me.” Sara said to Stephanie before looking down at Jordan.
“As for you, mister, I don’t trust your friend,” Sara said again, putting a friend in air quotes. As she approached the small facility, Jordan would be using for Gym class.
“I don’t understand what the deal is. We are just friends.” Jordan said.
“Well, your friend would do well to remember that you are mine,” Sara said as she grabbed Jordan’s arm and lowered him onto the field.
“What do you mean I’m yours? I don’t belong to anyone.” Jordan said.
“I’m your guardian Jordan. I’m the one caring for you. That makes you my little man, and I don’t appreciate her acting like I don’t have your best interests in mind.” Sara replied as she crossed her arms with an annoyed look on her face. “I’ve provided you with food, clothing, a habitat, a safe and warm place to stay. The only danger you’ve gotten into under my watch was your own fault when you were trying to be a big man and say how you didn’t need any supervision and you were attacked by a spider.”
“First off, we don’t talk about that spider. That thing was huge, a killer, and you should have squashed it to send a message to any others lurking around. Secondly, I appreciate what you’ve done for me. Really, I do. I just don’t like feeling like a possession.” Jordan said.
