“Mom, you have to admit it’s convenient that I can drive with Jordan. That way, you and dad won’t have to cart me around all the time. You are always saying how good of a driver I am. Pleeeaaasseeeeee.” Sara begged.
“I will look at this car and see what I think of it. It needs to be safe for you. Assuming I like what I see. I’ll allow it BUT, and I mean this, Sara. It’s to and from school and to and from work. No joyriding or extra trips until you get your proper license. If I even suspect you are doing any extra driving, lying, or not keeping your promises, that’s it, young lady. You won’t get any more chances.”
“Yes, mom. Thank you, thank you .” Sara said excitedly as she hugged her mom.
“I’m going to look at this car and talk with your father about this. You put these groceries away and get a start on your chores and homework. Oh, and no gaming or streaming outside of your contractual obligations for the next week.” Mrs. Reeves said as she headed outside to look at Sara’s car.
“You got so lucky. I thought your mom was really going to get upset.” Ellie said as she sat down in the kitchen as Sara continued to put away the groceries.
“Yeah, I don’t want to jinx anything, but I expected worse. She was way madder that one time we snuck out and said we were doing a sleepover at Mallory’s and spent the weekend at the beach.
“That was just this summer. You make it sound like it was years ago, you goof.” Ellie said with a laugh.
“Well, my ass got beat raw over that one. It was fun but definitely not worth the punishment. I still don’t have my allowance back.” Sara said.
“Like you need an allowance. You are doing just fine between streaming, your job at the theater, and babysitting Dayton.” Ellie said.
Even though Jordan had been shrunk by Smallera for a few days now, he hadn’t felt smaller than he did at this moment. It was clear to him that Tiffany and her husband thought of him as Sara’s. As he looked up at the giant teen from between the groceries, he didn’t like the idea of being considered her responsibility. He was basically being used as a more advanced version of a dog or cat to each their daughter’s responsibility.
“Are you pouting? I’m sorry I snapped at you. However, there is such a thing as timing. I really had to go bat to convince them to get you for me, and now I have to be on my best behavior. If my grades slip or my chores don’t get done. I’m gonna be in trouble.” Sara said.
“What do you mean get me for you?”
“I already told you about the fees and stuff. I mean we’re pretty well off. Not comparatively to a lot of the people you saw at school today. But I’m not blind. I realize I live a pretty comfortable life in comparison to most others. However, 40 to 50 grand is still a lot of money.”
“Yeah, like my parents won’t even consider it. I want to adopt one soooo badly. I’m sure I could have found one in this last outbreak, but they’d never go for that. I’d need to adopt from the government directly.” Ellie said.
“Yeah, but getting me for you makes it seem wrong. Like I was bought for you.” Jordan said.
“Well, you were bought for me as I wanted one. But before you get any ideas. My intent really was to help you when I found you in the yard. It’s just when they were denying more patients because they ran out of the vaccine. I just took advantage of the opportunity.” Sara said as she grabbed the last of the groceries.
