Surprise fell across Jordan’s face as he saw Chloe walk into Sara’s bedroom. The further she walked in, the more excited Jordan found himself getting as hope began to swell inside of him for the first time in hours. That hope welled up until he found himself jumping up and down, hoping to gain her attention. Jordan allowed himself to fantasize about the possibility of her even lifting the lid off and scolding Sara for keeping him in here like this. So when Chloe looked down at the small glass habitat that sat atop Sara’s nightstand and simply waved at him and smiled warmly, a part of him couldn’t help but feel betrayed.
Chloe leaned against Sara’s couch, giving Jordan a view of her gigantic body while Sara told Chloe that Jordan was basically grounded. Dashing all hopes and dreams of Chloe letting him out tonight. Taking it a step further, Jordan couldn’t believe he wasn’t getting out of there tonight. His release wouldn’t be until after Sara got back from school at the earliest.
The horrifying reality that he lived in now was fully realized. While Jordan wasn’t exactly crazy about going to school with Sara. She could, on a whim, confine him to this glass cage. Basically holding him prisoner. Jordan struggled to process that this habitat could be his entire world if Sara deemed it. She could stop him from seeing anyone effectively cutting him off from the world, and to her, it was all done with a flick of the wrist.
Jordan slunk over to the edge of his bed, feeling the weight of his reality. He now hoped that his ex-girlfriend or best friend could somehow free him from Sara. However, such thoughts were nothing more than fantasy. As it was a near impossibility that Sara would let him go. He was destined to spend his life in Sara’s bedroom behind glass unless she liked his answers on why he was trapped in there, to begin with.
The voices of Chloe and Sara boomed about the room and echoed in his habitat as he continued to sit on the corner of his bed, welcoming the mental stimulation. As the conversation unfolded before him, Jordan couldn’t believe that Sara and Chloe were in a relationship of some kind. He pondered briefly if this was what Sara was talking about earlier in the day when she said he wouldn’t need to worry that she would only date underbred friendly people.
Jordan did appreciate that Chloe had defended his rights and a part of him wondered if he maybe could appeal to her to get Sara to come around on some of her draconian thoughts that she held in regard to his place in this new world. Although it seemed unlikely, it was a bit of hope that Jordan needed to hold onto.
As their booming voices continued to swirl around him, he couldn’t help but smile as they talked about their future plans and life together. Experience told him it was a cute thought and fun to discuss, but experience told him that the relationships you hold in high school are everything in the moment and nothing but a few pencil strokes in the story of your life. Jordan knew better than to fully discount the relationship as he had heard stories from people over the years of marrying and settling down with their high school romance.
In his heart of hearts, if Jordan was being honest, he would admit that the discussion pained him as hearing the two talk about their future life together. If it all unfolded how they wanted, it was all seemingly so far above him now. These were things he could never have and do. Decisions and choices he could never make. As if Sara and Chloe did get an apartment or condo together at some point would he get a say in the matter? It seemed unlikely with Sara’s beliefs. If she wanted to do something, they would be doing it. At best, he would be informed of the decision when she packed his habitat in a box.
A rapping of the glass of Jordan’s habitat startled him from his thoughts. Looking up, he could see Chloe’s finger tapping against the side of his room. Yes, caged like an animal. Jordan thought to himself as he remembered animals at the zoo in similar situations. A panic set in as at that moment he had heard Chloe talk about converting a fish tank she had for him into some kind of self-sustaining home that he would live in. Jordan prayed that he had somehow misheard their words because their voices were loud and they spoke so fast. As the sheer notion of living forever in a fish tank was horrifying in and of itself. Even if they did convert it into a nice place, the idea that they could peek into his home like a zoo animal was not how he wanted to live.
No, Jordan knew he was going to have to stay on Sara’s good side. At least if she was happy with him, she was generally accepting of his input. She seemed at least to listen and consider what he said when she wasn’t upset with him.
