“Where’s the car?” Jordan asked, not seeing his SUV anywhere. Even though Sara had pretty much taken it over, he still viewed it as his.
“Oh yeah, you were grounded, so you didn’t hear. Yeah, Mom and Dad said it was okay if I drove as long as you were present. But mom didn’t think the car had enough safety features. So she traded it in and then got me this. Isn’t it cute? The license plate even says, Sara.” Sara said with a bit of excitement in her voice.
“You-you sold my car.” Jordan stammered out. As he looked at the car, he hated every part of it. Especially the license plate, which really reinforced just whose vehicle it was.
“You mean my car, and yeah, well, mom did. Technically Mom and Dad, but we all know who the driving force behind the decision was. This is a cute-looking car, though. I’ve been itching to drive it all day. But since you were grounded and not going to school today, I couldn’t.” Sara said in an annoyed tone that Jordan thought was a bit ironic since the one who grounded him was her.
Jordan knew it was silly to be upset about it. He couldn’t even drive it anymore. There was never going to be a situation where he would have been able to use it. The car was just the last touchstone he had in his former life. As he thought back on it now. It all seemed like another world. As everything now seemed almost foreign. He was re-learning how to live.
“You should know by now what’s yours is mine, and what’s mine is mine,” Sara said with a smirk.
“I guess that’s not any different than any other relationship I’ve been in,” Jordan said, trying to make light of the situation as Sara pressed a button on her Key to unlock the door.
As soon as the door opened and Sara sat down in the car, Jordan couldn’t help but be overwhelmed by the new car smell. As he looked around at the car, he became fully aware of how different their worlds were. Jordan remembered how much he struggled just to afford his house and car. They were the first truly adult decisions he made after college. He knew he was in a bit over his head, but the house would pay off in the long run. Sara’s family was in a completely different bracket than him, and they bought her car on a whim. Yes, they were able to trade in his car, but there would still be an expense.
Even the school she attended was quite luxurious compared to anything he had ever attended. They were quite well off compared to any barometer Jordan knew of, and yet based on what Sara had said, she was towards the bottom financially in comparison to her peers. He remembered Chloe talking about the trust she would get last night. It made him wonder if push came to shove if he had the resources it would take to actually free himself legally. He knew Daniela and Emily didn’t have that kind of money, and all his assets were in the process of being liquidated. Those funds would all go to Sara.
“Earth to Body Hottie,” Sara said, jarring Jordan from his thoughts and bringing him back to reality. He looked around at the inside of the car, not having heard a word Sara had said.
“Like I was saying do you want to sit in the cup holder, or you can sit on my lap?” Jordan looked at the cup holder and then over at Sara. The lap seemed like the better choice. As his last ride in a cup holder wasn’t pleasant. He was continually thrown into the walls with each stop and start.
