“You may feel a little fatigued from the vaccines. However, that should pass in about 24 hours.” Dr. Wilson said as she looked down at Jordan, who nodded.
Jordan felt Sara’s hand clutch him as she stood up. The warmth of Sara’s hand warmed his body, removing the cold chill he felt when he was on the examination chair. Jordan locked eyes with Lisa one last time, who waved at him before Sara turned and started walking towards the door.
Everything was a blur as Jordan hung in Sara’s hand as she walked down the hall towards the lobby area. Jordan was forced to crane his neck upward to fully see much of anything. Most of the people they passed by were just legs and torsos. It wasn’t until Sara pushed the door open to the outside that she lifted him up a bit higher, so her hand was a bit below her breastbone but lying flat so Jordan could stand up on his own power and sit in her hand.
Jordan wondered if she clutched him like that to send a message or if she just happened to grab him instead of letting him walk onto her hand. He thought about posing the question but, in the end, decided not to push it.
What lifted Jordan’s spirits a bit was that he wasn’t initially thrilled about his trip to the hospital and didn’t like the idea of getting vaccines or chipped. It did provide him with a bit of hope. It was the first time he truly got to interact with someone his own size in a natural way. It was a nice bit of normalcy that made him think maybe in time, as the United States adjusted to this new normal, he could have a semblance of a normal life. He wasn’t sure exactly how it would all work. But it was nice to think maybe his life wasn’t over.
When they got into the car, Sara set Jordan down on her shoulder this time. She didn’t like Jordan on her shoulder when she drove but figured he earned it. As she knew, he didn’t like not being able to see anything.
The situation was an odd juxtaposition for Jordan. While he has a strong fear of heights. He felt the safest higher up on Sara’s shoulder specifically. He wasn’t sure if it was her guardian training or just how she naturally moved. But she had a way of walking that wasn’t all that turbulent. He remembered being on Ellie’s shoulder, and he was bouncing around as she walked down the hall. While Sara generally made sure he had a smooth ride which led to his fear of heights not kicking in all that strongly.
“We just have to pick up Steph, and then we have to pick up Dayton at dance class,” Sara said as Jordan rolled his eyes, not looking forward to another meeting with that monster. Jordan shuddered when he thought about what his life could have been like if Dayton had found him instead of Sara.
“So, since you were so good in their playboy,” Sara said with a wink. “I will let you choose. Do you want the playlist of Taylor Swift’s recent albums or her older stuff when she was still country?”
