“Can I hold him?” Stephanie asked as she looked at Jordan. After everything he had gone through so far, he was not in the mood to be paraded around as some kind of show dog for her friends.
“As we learned in Spanish, Mi hombrecito es su hombrecito,” Sara said while Stephanie wasted no time reaching out to him. Jordan’s instinct was to back away closer to Sara. As while she had several faults she was the only protector he had. In this case, though no protection was coming as this was one of her close friends.
The hands of Stephanie were like walls on either side of him as she grabbed him awkwardly with both hands. Jordan could tell she was trying to be gentle, but he understood now the difference between someone who was trained to be a guardian and just a random person. Sara had a technique and skill in the way she handled him. Whereas Stephanie was a bit clumsy and awkward in comparison.
“I can’t get over how just a week ago he was a person and now he is–”
“Still a person,” Jordan said interjecting as Stephanie held him. He wanted to make sure she understood that fact. He needed her to see him as an equal in some way or he would never have respect.
“I thought we talked about this Jordan,” Sara said sweetly with the underlying tone of being quite serious. Jordan felt his body tense a bit in Stephanie’s hand when he heard Sara call him Jordan. He knew he had misspoken.
“I meant pet person because I’m your pet of course,” Jordan said a bit nervously.
“That’s a good boy,” Sara said reaching over while stopping at redlight and giving Jordan a head pat as positive reinforcement for answering properly.
“He seems a bit upset about that. It’s understandable that he would think of himself as a person.” Stephanie said as she felt his muscles press against hers as he tried to move out of her grip. After several moments the futility of it all became apparent and he resigned himself to being held by Stephanie. What bothered him most was having to call himself Sara’s pet. It was like he was forsaking his humanity. Any other option would lead him back to that habitat.
He knew she had no qualms about putting him back and leaving him inside like some kind of hamster or gerbil. She would feed and water him and he would never see anything beyond her bedroom. She had made it quite clear humanity was a reward for being her pet and noncompliance could take that right away. He was her little man and she was making sure he understood that.
