Jordan lay back on his recently acquired bed, gradually growing accustomed to the unforgiving truths of life as an underbred. The sturdy walls of reflective glass surrounding him offered a sense of security, yet he couldn’t shake off the sensation of being a zoo exhibit, placed on display behind an impenetrable barrier. Emotionally, it was disheartening, but having personally encountered the heightened perils of this world, he understood the pragmatic reasons behind such precautions.
Just a few feet away, Jordan’s teenage guardian pulled the bed covers over herself, engrossed in her phone. As she thumbed through it, occasional laughter or audible responses escaped her lips, but none of it was directed toward him. Jordan felt a twinge of awkwardness as he realized he wasn’t the center of attention anymore. He had grown accustomed to being the focal point of their activities, so observing Sara engaging with her friends through social media was a novel experience for him.
Walking over to the water dish Sara had left him made him remember he had forgotten to ask about a glass. In his mind, it was doubtful that Sara had a glass that would fit his small size. Jordan knelt down in front of the water dish and lowered his head so that he could drink from the dish. While the water was room temperature he hadn’t realized just how thirsty he was. The normally tasteless water now was divine as it slid down his throat.
As soon as Jordan finished drinking he quickly looked over at Sara. As he didn’t want her to see him drinking like this. Based on the sounds he heard she was watching some kind of video. He assumed she was on TikTok. Jordan felt a relief that she hadn’t seen that embarrassing spectacle. The last thing he wanted was for her to see him drinking like the pet she already thinks of him as.
“I know you’re probably sick of cereal. I got some little pell I mean little food for your dish. It’s specially formulated to be all the vitamins you need. I’ll still feed you regular food and stuff when you’re with me though.” Sara added not looking up from her phone. Jordan felt his cheeks grow warm with a bit of embarrassment. But, he tried to remind himself it was normal.
“You were gonna say pellets like I’m some kind of rabbit or hamster.”
“No, I was just searching for the right words as it’s food made for littles. It looks like cereal but it’s thinner so you won’t have to wet it before eating it. It’s made for your jaw strength. It has all the vitamins, fruit, veggies, and protein you need.”
“So you’re giving me dog food,” Jordan said with a huff.
“I just saw you drinking and it reminded me to tell you about the food I ordered for you. Like I said you will still be eating with me almost all the time but I can’t just have you inside your habitat without proper food or water. You can’t just have cereal in there. The little food does look like cereal. Plus there could be times you don’t like what I’m eating. This is just an alternative option. It’s not like you are going to be eating nothing but little food or something. You are still going to be eating regular food. I also got you some little cups but they are backordered. Little cups are apparently very popular with the recent uptick in cases.”
“Isn’t there little food that looks like your food?”
“That is very expensive. Do I look like I have Chloe’s money? As that kind of thing uses all the same ingredients but is prepared in little-sized quantities so it’s very time-consuming.
