Kayla Episode 4: A Smallara Story

Kayla Episode 4

The world whizzed by in a blur of motion and noise, but Kelli was starting to feel bold. She sat up straighter now, growing more confident with every smooth turn. Kayla had been skating for years, and it showed. Even at her reduced size, Kelli could feel the precision of her sister’s movements. The board seemed like an extension of Kayla herself, responding to every shift in weight with fluid, practiced grace. Kelli remembered watching her sister skate when they were younger, admiring how effortlessly she controlled the board, as if it were second nature. That same mastery was what kept Kelli steady now.

As they approached the old skatepark, the sounds of others drifted into Kelli’s heightened ears, laughter, the clatter of boards hitting pavement, the carefree shouts of kids who had nothing to worry about. They were living their lives, untouched by the kind of reality Kelli now faced. No one there had to wonder what was happening to their room, or how it felt to live under the care of their younger sister. No one else was living in a world that wasn’t made for them anymore.

“So, like, you and Kelli just live together? Like 24/7?” Talisa asked, her voice casual as they rolled toward a set of worn bleachers. “What’s that even like? I mean, you guys love each other, but you’re different, you know?”

Kayla glanced down at Kelli, then shrugged as she spoke. “It’s mostly the same. I just do my thing. I try to include Kelli sometimes, but… she’s been, well, Kelli,” Kayla said with a small smirk, her tone dropping as she added, “She’s still upset about her friends ditching her as soon as they found out about the Smallara. The vulnerable ones didn’t want the reminder, and the immune ones didn’t want a Little hanging around…”

“Kayla,” Kelli interrupted, her voice cutting through the conversation like a sharp edge, “I can hear you. Your whispers are practically blaring like a PA system to me now. My hearing’s been off the charts since I got out of the facility. I hear everything.”

Kayla glanced down sheepishly. “What? I didn’t say anything bad. You have been mopey. One afternoon, you even hung out with Mom.” She laughed a little, her carefree attitude contrasting with Kelli’s irritation.

Kelli groaned dramatically. “Yeah, and I wanted to hang myself off the side of the couch. I love Mom, but she’s so boring! You have no idea. I don’t know how I survived two hours of knitting talk.”

“Hey, trust me for a second, okay?” Kayla’s tone shifted, her playful smile returning as she focused on the board beneath her feet. “Just stay still. I want to try something.”

“Kayla, no. No, no, no. What are you doing?” Kelli’s grip on the board tightened, her heart already racing as her instincts screamed that her sister was about to do something reckless. “Kayla, stop and take me off first. I give you permission to hand me over to Talisa—Kayla!”

Her words turned into a scream as Kayla suddenly kicked off, skating alongside the bleachers with a burst of speed. Before Kelli could process what was happening, Kayla leaped into the air, her body momentarily suspended above the board like she was weightless. Kelli’s stomach dropped as she watched her sister fly, seemingly hovering above her, before landing gracefully on the bleachers with a thud. Kayla ran alongside the board, which was still gliding forward, her feet moving effortlessly as if she’d rehearsed this a thousand times.

Kelli’s world tilted as Kayla bounded off the bleachers and back onto the board in one fluid motion, her feet slamming down on either side of her tiny sister. Kelli clung to the board, heart pounding in her chest.

“I almost peed myself, Kayla! Never do that again!” Kelli’s voice was shaking with a mix of fear and adrenaline as she glared up at her sister.

Kayla just smirked down at her, clearly pleased with herself. “You had full control of the board, Kelli. I have faith in you, little sis.”

Kelli’s eyes narrowed, and she sat up straighter, indignation flashing across her face. “I am not your little sis! I’m older! You’re my kid sister, now and forever! Now stop this board right this instant.”

Kayla only laughed, leaning back slightly as if to tease Kelli even further. “What, you think I’m gonna kickflip now? Relax.”

“Kayla, I swear, if you kickflip right now, I’ll beat you!” Kelli’s voice was rising, her frustration palpable. “I might only be able to reach your ankle, but that ankle is gonna be bloody. You know I’m a scratcher.”

Kayla rolled her eyes, finally giving in as she slowed the board to a stop. “Fine, fine. I was just playing around. I just wanted to get a rise out of the great Kelli Wallace.”

Kelli’s expression softened for a moment, though she still scowled up at her sister. “You never came out to my world,” Kayla continued, her voice quieter now, more thoughtful. “You always brought me to yours. This,” she gestured around the skatepark, “this is the only place I’m in control, Kelli. The only place I get to be more than just your kid sister.”

Kelli blinked, taken aback by Kayla’s admission. For the first time in a long while, she felt a pang of empathy for her sister. She had always been the one in charge, always the one with the spotlight. Now, for better or worse, that balance had shifted. And as much as she hated her new reality, part of her realized Kayla had been living in a shadow for years.

“Well, congratulations,” Kelli muttered, her voice quieter now too. “You’re in control now.”

“Kelli, I didn’t mean it like that,” Kayla called out, her voice laced with regret. But Kelli wasn’t listening. In a burst of frustration, she jumped off the board, the ground much farther beneath her than she’d anticipated. Her tiny legs didn’t brace for the impact well, and she stumbled, landing awkwardly with a thud. For a split second, the world tilted, and Kelli’s face hit the rough concrete, her hands barely catching her in time.

“Are you okay?” Kayla’s voice was filled with concern as she bent down, her shadow looming over Kelli. “I didn’t mean to scare you or hurt your feelings.”

Kelli pushed herself up quickly, more out of pride than anything else. “I’m fine,” she muttered, brushing the grit from her hands. Without looking back, she began walking away from Kayla and Talisa, her small steps defiant yet futile against the vastness of the skatepark.

“Where are you going?” Kayla asked, her voice following Kelli like an unwanted echo. “Kelli, I’m sorry. I just want”

“Just wanted to make fun of the Little,” Kelli interrupted, her voice trembling with a mix of anger and humiliation. “I’m sorry for being such a shitty sister.”

She kept walking, though she had no idea where she was headed. It wasn’t like she could really go anywhere, every direction felt the same, an endless expanse of pavement and towering figures. But it didn’t matter. She just needed to get away from Kayla’s pity, from Talisa’s silent judgment. From the world that had shrunk her down and stolen her dignity.

“Kelli, stop!” Kayla’s footsteps were right behind her, each one shaking the ground beneath Kelli’s feet. “You’re going to get hurt! There are people skateboarding around here, and they’re not watching for someone your size.”

Kelli knew she was right. She could hear the rumble of wheels nearby, the clatter of boards landing tricks, but she didn’t care. She just wanted to feel like she had control, even if it was for a fleeting moment. But that moment was shattered when Kayla’s shadow stretched over her again, the ground beneath darkening as Kayla stepped forward. In one swift motion, the entire distance Kelli had just traveled a distance that had felt so monumental to her was erased in a single step.

Kayla now stood above her, her legs on either side of Kelli like two pillars. The sight of her towering sister, so easily closing the gap, only deepened Kelli’s sense of powerlessness. She could walk and walk, but she’d never really escape. She was too small, and the world was too big. Kayla’s world was too big.

“I’m not making fun of you,” Kayla said softly, her voice less playful now, more vulnerable. “I’m just… I don’t know what to do, Kelli. I don’t know how to make this right.”

Kelli stopped in her tracks, her anger simmering beneath the surface. She didn’t look up, but she could feel Kayla’s presence above her unavoidable, inescapable. “You can’t make it right,” Kelli said, her voice quiet and tired. “None of this is right.”

I have a dumb question is this set before Kayla meets Sara and Jordan?

This was a tough one to read. Kelli wants to end it all because she feels powerless in a world where she is now nothing more than a pet to her little sister but hopefully, the Wallace sisters can work through their issues and come out stronger on the other side.

Her ex-friends are shitty people.

I thinks it’s after she meets them possibly the next day or day after the party.

Yep and I bet that’s how many Littles feel but don’t have the spaces or ability to express said emotions of grief or sadness towards their now diminished life’s. Like they are just existing but not truly living like their bigger counterparts in this world and I love when we explore those sides of the story and see if that get better or worse and I’m betting it will get better for the sister here.

P.S there’s no way in hell that in this day and age that any mother talks hours or at all about knitting I refuse to believe that for one second lol

  1. Thanks for the answer
  2. There’s got to be Little Therapists trained by Generitech that littles could go to.
  3. Yeah I’m with you knitting can’t be that popular in the modern day.

2. funny enough, the store littles and the ones that are more in the Generitech system have some form of that based on the Little Mart story from a few weeks ago. I just don’t know why they aren’t consumer available or if we will ever see that

Finally! So happy they’re communicating, but sad that Kelli is in the position. I think her emotional state is clouding how Kayla and Talisa are viewing her. Kayla I think is genuinely remorseful that Kelli is in this position and, given this chapter, completely understands what it is that Kelli’s lost. I also think Kelli never realized until now that Kaylas confidence and self-esteem were so low that Skating and videogames are the only places she feels good about herself and not in Kelli’s shadow. Now that it’s coming out in the open though they can both work on it with each other.

Regarding Talisa, I don’t think she’s judging, I think she’s in a similar boat as Kayla but feels even more helpless since she can’t really do anything to help. She definetly looks at Kelli like her sister, so seeing her struggle probably is tough, especially since she was basically “wonder woman”

overall, just happy no one is bottlin things up. Hope we get some madison’s world style thought POV”s from Kayla and Talisa

1) “Kelli was starting to feel bold. She sat up straighter now, growing more confident with every smooth turn.” That’s gonna make kelli more likely to fly off due to wind resistance.

2) “No one there had to wonder what was happening to their room, or how it felt to live under the care of their younger sister” for all she knows this park is full of vulnerable kids living thier fullest before their infection, with thise exact concerns in the back of their minds.

3) “So, like, you and Kelli just live together? Like 24/7?” so like, does Talisa just have zero fucking concept of guardianship?

4.1) “It’s mostly the same. I just do my thing. I try to include Kelli sometimes, but… she’s been, well, Kelli,” same for Kayla, Kelli’s life was irreparably altered.
4.2) “She’s still upset about her friends ditching her as soon as they found out about the Smallara. The vulnerable ones didn’t want the reminder, and the immune ones didn’t want a Little hanging around…” that really sucks for Kelli, I feel so bad for her.

5) “Kelli interrupted, her voice cutting through the conversation like a sharp edge,” impressive voice for a little.

6) “Hey, trust me for a second, okay?” that phrase is always a red flag

7.1) “her heart already racing as her instincts screamed that her sister was about to do something reckless.” Yeah, that’d be fucking terrifying.
7.2) “Kayla, stop and take me off first. I give you permission to hand me over to Talisa—Kayla!” oh wow, lucky Talisa.

8) “Kayla leaped into the air, her body momentarily suspended above the board like she was weightless. Kelli’s stomach dropped as she watched her sister fly, seemingly hovering above her,” that’d be fucking nightmare fuel.

9.1) “I almost peed myself, Kayla! Never do that again!” a fair reaction.
9.2) “You had full control of the board, Kelli. I have faith in you, little sis.” not the time for teasing.

10) “I might only be able to reach your ankle, but that ankle is gonna be bloody. You know I’m a scratcher.” I’d find it hard to believe little fingernails can break human skin.

11) “Fine, fine. I was just playing around. I just wanted to get a rise out of the great Kelli Wallace.” $200 says Tamara’s used that exact line only changing her victims name.

12) “You never came out to my world, You always brought me to yours.” They both did soccer, they had overlap between their worlds already. Even if in Kelli’s shadow they have common ground.

13) “For the first time in a long while, she felt a pang of empathy for her sister.” Empathy’s good, I do feel a bit bad for Kayla, buy what she did is just bullying.

14) “Well congratulations, You’re in control now.” “Kelli, I didn’t mean it like that,” Kelli’s having a valid reaction, and Kayla feeling bad is good to see.

15) “Kelli wasn’t listening. In a burst of frustration, she jumped off the board,” I’d want to get off that board as quickly as possible too, but that was just reckless and the way she hits the ground reflects this.

16) “I didn’t mean to scare you or hurt your feelings.” yes you did, you “wanted to get a rise out of the great Kelli Wallace.” by your own words.

17) “Kelli, I’m sorry. I just want” – “Just wanted to make fun of the Little, I’m sorry for being such a shitty sister.” Kelli’s reaction is justified.

18) “Kayla stepped forward. In one swift motion, the entire distance Kelli had just traveled a distance that had felt so monumental to her was erased in a single step.” That’d feel so demoralising.

19.1) “I’m not making fun of you,” yes you were, denying that will only piss her off more.
19.2) “I’m just… I don’t know what to do, Kelli. I don’t know how to make this right.” I do appreciate that Kayla is regretful of her actions, a certain guardian we’ve spent a lot of time with would have doubled down on her wrongdoing towards her little, and then made fun of him for getting upset.

20) “You can’t make it right, none of this is right.” poor poor Kelli.

1) I’m surprised she got so comfortable so quickly, though It sounds like it’s something she’ll unfortunately need to get used to. I wonder if Kayla could use Kelli’s licence like how Sara uses Jordan’s. I get why Kayla would think she’s treating Kelli equally, but accommodating someone’s disability is not treating them as inferior.

2) She is quite selfish

4.2) She could make new little friends, she seemed to like Jordan when she met him, in an alternate universe she does enjoy her time with Little Dayton

6) Would you like the list in alphabetical order or in order of severity?/s

7.1) The unknown makes it worse.

7.2) I’m sure Talisa will hold her sooner or later.

9.1) Me too
9.2) I guess, doesn’t absolve her though.

11) not the point, what is the point? Here’s the point; She’s acting like Tamara does towards her.

13) Siblings also bully eachother, often, it’s actually quite common, unfortunately.

14) She knows she messed up.

16) She can admit she went too far, but denying it entirely will only make her feel like Kayla’s trying to invalidate her.

17) No, but she did do a bad thing, and it’s compounded with ever other stress Kelli’s been dealing with.

18) Not on Kayla I agree, which makes her seem even more hopeless.

19.1) It’s new for both of them.
19.2) Madison would do that to Cindy, then blame Cindy, and Sara absolutely would do that to Jordan

20) and often cruel

I love how Kayla and Kelli still act like sisters and with a bit of normalcy, despite the circumstances.

For sure. They’re my favorite pairing. I don’t expect things to be perfect but I really think they’re the two that are most likely to be a team of some kind with Kelli helping Kayla with her self esteem and being more outgoing and Kayla helping Kelli experience life
