Jordan took bite after bite of the section of wrap that Sara had brought over. He hadn’t felt so hungry before as he continued to eat. While in the back of his mind, he kept thinking about Sara wanting to discuss this at home. It gave him chills of when he was younger, and his mother would tell him to wait till we get home. This often meant a long car ride home of being talked to and then once they got home the real punishment began. It was enough of a deterrent that after the first couple of times, he behaved quite well in public.
“Sara, I wasn’t trying to run from you. It was more just frustration of everything.”
“You should eat up. Dayton’s mom will be here soon. We will discuss your actions at home. As Mom always says. We don’t air our dirty laundry in public.”
“Yes, Ma’am,” Jordan said while hating the fact Sara once again reprimanded him. Making matters worse, he actually felt bad about his choices. When earlier he was certain that everything he had done was justified up until almost dying from an insect. He has since had some regrets.
Jordan sighed as he looked up at Sara briefly. Any sign of the sadness she felt or the tears that were starting to show around her eyes was gone. The Facade or mask that she wore was in full effect. The final words she said were chilling and depressing to him. We are going to be smiling and cheery and happy. He wondered how many times she told herself that. How many times did she put on a fake smile and pretend to be happy? How often was the cheeriness she peppered her friends and family with nothing but a disguise?
“Are you full little guy?” Sara asked as Jordan stepped away from the wrap rubbing his belly. He couldn’t eat another bite if he tried. He could see some of the remains of another wrap that Sara had eaten completely. Looking at the still half-eaten wrap it looked like he barely had made a dent in it. He was a full-grown man, and he probably couldn’t even eat the amount of food Sara ate in a single bite.
Jordan nodded that he was full as he stepped off the plate, allowing Sara to take it back into the kitchen. He watched her disappear as he heard the idle chatter of the girls. It was loud enough that he couldn’t discern any specifics. It was just a loud mixture of voices.
As Sara walked back into the room, she lowered her hand so that Jordan could climb in. The front door opened and closed as Sara lifted him up so that he could climb onto her shoulder.
“That must be Dayton’s mom. She’s not a huge fan of underbreds. Stay close to me, please.” Sara asked as Jordan moved so that he was closer to her neck. As she walked into the living room, Sara’s hair fell around him. Normally he would move out of it a bit. But he didn’t want to draw unwanted attention to him from Dayton’s mom.
He listened to Sara make small talk with Dayton’s mom as they discussed how the day went. It was all normal enough. A part of him wished Dayton’s mom would rain hellfire down upon her devil spawn. However, based on what Sara had said, he wasn’t surprised by Dayton’s mom’s reaction. Peeking at her through Sara’s hair she seemed only mildly disappointed in her daughter.
As Sara stepped outside with Chloe and Stephanie in tow Jordan felt relieved to be free of the shackles of Dayton and her home. He wasn’t sure when Sara had to watch Dayton next, but any amount of time would be too soon in his opinion.
