Chloe couldn’t believe Sara had left Jordan with her. She was, as Sara called him, her pet. She knew how important he was to her, and he seemed to make her happier than she had seen her in a while. She assumed it was because she liked feeling needed. It bothered Chloe initially as she liked to think she was all Sara needed. However, the more she thought about it. She found that Jordan was different. Sara liked that Jordan was dependent on her. He was tiny and frail. He couldn’t survive outdoors. It’s a struggle for him to get food or water. What she had with Sara was different. The way they needed each other was more two halves making a whole.
“So, I heard you got into a bit of trouble today Jordan,” Chloe said, trying to make small talk.
Jordan always noticed that she was the only person who still called him Jordan. Sara had systematically made sure everyone only knew him as Body Hottie. However, Chloe always used his real name. He always appreciated that with her. It was a small thing, but it helped him feel like a person in a world determined to take that away.
“Yeah, I assume she showed you the pictures and everything. I guess you’re probably upset with me too.”
“I wouldn’t say mad. I don’t like what your actions did to the person I care about. But yeah, I saw and heard it all. I don’t understand what would make you try to run away here of all places into the yard. What was your end game? Live in Dayton’s backyard? I mean Dayton, of all people. She’s a sweet girl, don’t get me wrong. But she’s also a bit manipulative, bossy, and mean. I just would have thought you’d try at a time you had more advantages.” Chloe said.
“wait, you knew I was going to try to run? Why wouldn’t you say something to Sara.”
“Look, Jordan, I’m sorry you got Smallera, and I think what the government is doing is horrible. How they are treating people like you. The way your rights are being eroded. It’s sickening. The way our president and his party act like they are doing everything they can to help you when they really want to help themselves make more money. To them, actually helping you is an afterthought. Where Sara really wants to help you. Yes, she has her own problems, and we all try to be there as much as we can for her. However, you have been just kind of ungrateful and unappreciative of it all. She spent her weekend going through things at your house, filing paperwork and forms. Talking with that social worker and setting up appointments for you. She has been spending her money on little furniture and clothing to make you feel like her home is also yours. Don’t get me wrong. I know how hard this must be for you. How devastating it must be to lose everything you have worked for. However, you have a guardian who actually wants to help you. You may not always agree with everything she does or the way she does things, but she actually wants to help you. She isn’t doing this as some get-rich-quick scheme like some people as she doesn’t need your money.”
“I wasn’t trying to run from Sara herself. Part of me was just trying to run from it all. I wanted to feel like I was in control of something.” Jordan argued but he knew in his heart of hearts that he was lying not only to Chloe but to himself. He was trying to run. Not specifically from Sara but from everything. Even running was an impossibility now unless he just wanted to run to his death. The idea of throwing his life away was something he wasn’t prepared to do.
