The fact that Jordan was being reprimanded by his teenage guardian was not lost on him. It was humiliating to be chastised and the worst part of it was at this moment he couldn’t even argue back. What was more troubling was he didn’t like the idea of repercussions. Jordan hoped that Sara just intends to lecture him.
Jordan felt the gentle rocking as Sara clambered up the stairs. He thought about mentioning the homework situation to her but right now didn’t seem like the best time. However, if he could get out from underneath Dayton’s thumb that would be ideal.
As Sara walked upstairs and into the living room Jordan saw that they all had migrated into the living room. He saw Dayton side-eye him out of the corner of his eye. She grabbed Nicolle’s book bag and pulled out her math book with one hand while she held a finger in front of her lips telling him to keep quiet. As she dropped the book back into Nicolle’s bag Dayton stomped her foot enough for Jordan to get the message but not so loud anyone else noticed.
Jordan wanted to react but found himself too tired. The adrenaline of running and fighting for your life had fallen off. The vaccine Jordan was given had worked its way throughout his system and zapped some of his strength and while Dayton did provide him water he was starving. His body simply relaxed into Sara’s hand where he was doubtful he could move much even if he wanted to.
“I’m going to leave you with Chloe for a bit okay? I’m just going to be in the kitchen talking to Dayton.” Sara as she walked over to Chloe who was sitting on the couch. Sara held her hand in front of Chloe who looked down at Jordan and then over at Sara confused as to why he was being held out to her.
“You’re supposed to put your hand out next to mine so he can walk over,” Sara said as Chloe looked at Sara a bit nervously.
“A-are you sure? I mean Steph is here. She loves holding him. I wouldn’t want to step on her toes.”
“You haven’t held him at all. You’re my girlfriend. You two need to get used to each other. You’re both such big parts of my life now.” Sara as she encouragingly looked at Chloe.
“Sure, yeah. No big deal.” Chloe said nervously as she held her hand out next to Sara’s.
“Do I need to do anything specific? I mean I don’t have any training or anything.” Chloe said nervously as she looked down at Jodan who was starting to stand up as he looked at Chloe with a bit of trepidation.
Jordan had been around Chloe a lot but she hadn’t really made any moves to hold him or pay him any special attention like Ellie and Steph. She hadn’t displayed the excitement of Dayton has with him either. As he stepped over to Chloe’s hand he could feel it trembling as his foot sunk into the palm of her hand.
“I’ll be back. I just have to have a little talk with Dayton. Behave.” Sara said as she bent down and gave Chloe a kiss. Before her eyes looked down at Jordan. “You better behave too,” Sara said as she gave Jordan a loving head pat before walking towards the kitchen to check on Dayton.
