“If that’s what you really want. I’m not going to force you. The only thing I’m putting my foot down on is you running away and acting without thinking. I know you’re used to being able to just do things on your own. I can only imagine how frustrating it must be to need help with even simple things. What you did today was not only dangerous, but it was reckless.”
“You were right. I wasn’t even trying to escape you. Really, I wasn’t. I just got so turned around in the yard and I was trying to avoid Dayton.” Jordan said, trying to mend things with Sara, who seemed more hurt than he anticipated. He expected her to fly off the handle. The only thing he had to figure out was how to put the kibosh on this collar talk.
“I believe you. It doesn’t change the fact you’re still getting a collar. You violated and broke my trust. It will take a lot of work to rebuild that.” Sara said as she started heading up the stairs. “The collar discussion is over. You’re my little man, and I’ve made up my mind. This is for your own good. If you do get separated from me, everyone will know who you belong to.”
“Sara, you can’t.”
“It’s part of the little I.D. system. You will be mandated to be registered and collared by the end of the year. I’m just pushing up the date. It’s more of an immediate thing for you. There was a State of the Union address while you were trying to run away.”
Jordan couldn’t help the extra emphasis she put on running away. It was clear she was going to be watching him like a hawk after his most recent attempt to flee.
“State of the Union address? What is the little i.d. System?”
“It’s for you and people like you. You don’t need a driver’s license or anything like that it doesn’t make sense for you. So you have a little I.D. You get a little I.D. number instead of social security number. All of you underbreds need to be registered. It’s basically illegal to have an unregistered underbred. You don’t need to worry about it though. You’re already registered. I took care of that at the start because you have a good guardian. We just need to get you a collar.”
“couldn’t they just make a smaller version of your i.d. Why does it have to be a collar? I’m still a…person…pet.” Jordan said
“That’s a good boy. Of course, you are and you still have rights. You’re still a citizen and you get to vote. You just have different rights than I do. But I also can advocate for you. If you stop trying to run away we can get work on making your life better.” Sara said pointedly. It wasn’t lost on Jordan that she emphasized the running away. Something he could tell did seem to hurt her on some level.
“So what else did they take from me?” Jordan asked curiously while feeling absolutely drained. Every part of his body felt heavy and worn down from today’s events. He didn’t want to admit it but it felt good to be back in Sara’s relatively safe hands.
“They actually put in a bunch of laws protecting underbreds. Where not registering you, smuggling you, trying to sell you, if someone would steal you or keep you from me, it would be a class A felony which is basically life in prison and a 250,000 dollar fine. It could even be the death penalty I suppose if it was something truly horrific. Chloe is all up on this kind of thing.”
“L-life in prison?” Jordan was dumbfounded by what he heard. He knew these laws were designed to protect people like him. But, they also further tied him to Sara. It sounded like even if he did somehow escape to one of his friends or his ex. They would have to report him or give him back to Sara or they could end up in jail.
“Well yeah, kidnapping an underbred is serious. It takes a lot of training, time, and money to get one. You don’t need to worry though as you have me. Just so you know, you are obviously not getting any points this week. If you behave the rest of the week you can resume getting points next week. We can talk about how disappointed I am in you at home and what the repercussions for your thoughtless and dangerous actions are. ”
